This is a single incumbent class in the Police Department responsible for enforcing animal regulatory codes, reporting to and receiving supervision and direction from the assigned Police Sergeant or Lieutenant of the Patrol Division.
Under general supervision, performs enforcement of State Laws, City Ordinances and regulations relating to animal control; captures and impounds stray, unwanted, or dead animals; and performs related duties as required.

National City Animal Control Officer: $42,465 – $51,616 Annually
- Answers complaints regarding domestic and wild animals
- Explains the provisions of various codes and ordinances regarding animals
- Writes violation notices and issues citations; and testifies in court proceedings
- Patrols the City for violations of laws pertaining to animals
- Impounds stray animals understanding some may become violent, and removes dead animals from public and private properties
- Transports impounded animals to the contract Animal Care Facility
- Captures and transports sick and inured animals to contract veterinarians
- Performs emergency euthanasia on irredeemably suffering animals
- Investigates animal bites and arranges for the quarantine of animals involved
- Keeps records and submits reports of animal impounded and investigations conducted
- Drives a motor vehicle
- Operates a two-way radio
- Carries and uses a pistol, rifle, shotgun, and tranquilizing guns, as well as various types of animal traps, ropes and restraints in the performance of duties
- Graduation from high school and one (1) year of work or volunteer experience in the care and handling of domestic and/or wild animals with a recognized agency or enterprise.

Based upon review of applications received, those applicants who best meet the requirements indicated above will be invited to continue in the qualifying process, which may consist of written examination and oral interviews. The oral interviews will be conducted by a panel, which will evaluate each candidate’s relevant experience, educational background and training. Names of those receiving a passing score (70% or above) will be placed on an eligibility list and will be eligible for vacancies that occur over the next one (1) year. Selection to a vacant position will be made from the top five (5) candidates ranked highest on the list.
A comprehensive background investigation and fingerprinting, voice stress recognition (CVSA), including medical and alcohol/drug screening will be required for finalist prior to hire.
